The US Department of Agriculture approved the disbursement for the new phase of disaster food assistance of the Nutrition Assistance Program (PAN) of 600 million dollars to meet the needs of families below the poverty level in Puerto Rico.
The governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, informed on Wednesday through a statement that this aid will benefit those who suffered losses after the passage of hurricanes Irma and María.
The approval of the disbursement is given by the amendment to the Comprehensive Plan presented by the Administration of Socioeconomic Family Development (ADSEF) of the Department of the Family to the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS, for its acronym in English).
“Compliance with the standards and requirements established in the PAN for food assistance, as well as the close collaboration between federal and state officials to achieve this additional support to our families below the poverty level were key to obtaining this approval,” the first executive emphasized.
Rosselló added that “we know that this food support is fundamental for families that still face great challenges, and this assistance gives them the opportunity to concentrate their limited resources on their recovery.”
The federal appropriation authorized by Congress and endorsed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on June 6 for a total of 600 million dollars, which will be valid until September 2020.
The ADSEF is entrusted with administering the benefits of the PAN and the increase in monthly benefits.
As of June 2019, 1.3 million people, distributed among 700,000 families, receive benefits from the NAP.
The governor thanked the secretary of the federal Department of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, and the directors of the FNS program “for their diligence and availability to ensure that Puerto Ricans receive this food support.”
Rosselló expressed confidence that -as happened with the previous allocation of 1.2 billion dollars that benefited over 700,000 affected families in Puerto Rico- this new phase will show that by supporting the most needy families, opportunities for Social Mobility.
