House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that President Donald Trump is “undermining” U.S. “national security” after asking the Chinese government to investigate the family of former vice president and presidential pre-candidate Joe Biden.

“With his comments, the president is undermining and endangering our national security,” Pelosi said at a press conference in Weston, South Florida, where he participated in a meeting with leaders of Venezuelan organizations in which he addressed the situation in this country.

“It is sad for the country that it has a president who has put us in this situation,” Pelosi said when asked about the start of a impeachment suit against Trump.

After defending the constitutional foundations that justify the beginning of this process motivated by an alleged abuse of power incurred by Trump for political gain, Pelosi said: “Our constitution is worth it, our democracy and our republic are worth it”.

The president is accused of trying to persuade Ukraine to investigate the Biden family for alleged corruption in that country, which is the basis for the initiation of an impeachment investigation by House Democrats.

Pelosi’s comments come after Trump on Thursday publicly called on China to investigate what may become its main political rival in the upcoming elections, Democrat Joe Biden, and insist that Ukraine do the same.

Pelosi recalled the role played by intelligence personnel who participate in meetings and telephone conversations such as the one that has led to the “impeachment” process.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, also Democrat Adam Schiff, on Thursday called Trump’s pressures a “fundamental violation of the presidential oath”.

The speaker of the House of Representatives discussed in the city of Weston the efforts for a peaceful transition in Venezuela together with the ambassador of the “interim” government of this country, Carlos Vecchio, and Democratic legislators Donna Shalala, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, in addition to commissioners of this city.
