French President Emmanuel Macron has announced several separate meetings with his US counterparts Donald Trump and Iran, Hassan Rohani, in order to “avoid the escalation” of tension between the two after the recent attacks on Saudi refineries.

“I had a first informal exchange with President Trump at the beginning of the (climate) summit this morning, and tonight I will see President Rohani and President Trump again tomorrow,” Macron told reporters at the United Nations headquarters.

The White House had denied last Friday in statements to Efe that it had scheduled any meeting with Macron, and Trump said Sunday that he has no “plans” to meet with Rohaní in New York, although he is always “open” to that possibility and would accept the meeting “if they (the Iranians) wanted to”.
