Puerto Rico representative before Congress, Jenniffer González, ruled out the possibility to become governor of the Caribbean island, before meeting with the new head of that position, Wanda Vázquez, to discuss the strategy to be followed before federal authorities in Washington.
“I do not see vacancy for government. There is a governor for all Puerto Ricans and we have to work. The people of Puerto Rico want to get out of the uncertainty and the crisis,” Gonzalez said in statements to local media.
“I am here to work with her – the governor – in all initiatives at the federal level for the good of Puerto Rico,” she said.
Gonzalez, who last week publicly showed her willingness to assume the position of governor, recalled that Vázquez had indicated that she did not want to assume that position, which caused her to be asked.
She said that now, the governor has already assumed her position and has made it clear that she will remain in it, which is why she advanced that her intention is to work together, because, she stressed, “Puerto Rico has many things to advance upon”.
González also stressed that all the bases of the ruling New Progressive Party (PNP) want to work and continue with the projects that are important for Puerto Rico.
She also said that she was happy to have been summoned by Vázquez for a meeting in which she will try to advance the interests of Puerto Rico in the federal capital.
“I am happy to work with the governor of all Puerto Ricans,” she said, after stressing that the purpose of the meeting was to find the Executive’s position in the face of her collaboration with Washington in the search for federal aid.
González stressed that it will be very important to show to the White House in Washington that Puerto Rico has returned to normal after the crisis that began in mid-July which led to the resignation of Ricardo Rosselló due to cases of government corruption and the disclosure of a chat where people from different social groups were criticized.
The presidents of the two legislative houses had shown their preference last week because Gonzalez assumed the position of governor on the grounds that it was an initiative of those who had been elected by the people of Puerto Rico.
