Dallas (USA), Oct. 16.- Unified welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr. has been charged with driving while intoxicated, a class B misdemeanor, according to a Dallas Police spokesman. .
Spence Jr. was drunk when he crashed his Ferrari car at high speed last Thursday, Dallas Police said.
Spence Jr., 29, who, as a result of the accident, had to be hospitalized in intensive care, and who has already been discharged, has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
The fighter, from the suburb DeSoto (Dallas), was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown out of the car, which overturned several times in the accident that occurred around 3:00 a.m. Center time.
The car turned left onto the central median towards the southbound lanes before turning and expelling Spence.
“Mr. Spence was discharged from the hospital and will have to face the charges,” said the Dallas Police spokesman.
He added that “as for obtaining the speed of the vehicle, we will not obtain it, since it was a single car accident without other criminal charges. Therefore, there is no reason to obtain an arrest warrant to take out the (black box) vehicle”.
Spence suffered no fractures or broken bones, only facial lacerations and broken teeth.
Spence is 26-0, with 21 knockouts. At the moment it is unknown how long it will be out of action.
