Former New York City mayor and Democratic primary candidate Mike Bloomberg on Wednesday unveiled his plan to expand and safeguard access to reproductive services, including affordable birth control, and protect reproductive freedom from Donald Trump’s policies.
According to Bloomberg in a note, “Trump initiated a war on women’s reproductive rights by restricting access to affordable and effective birth control, thus pushing states to backtrack on women’s rights”.
According to reproductive health care provider Planned Parenthood, Trump has appointed more than 100 judges who are hostile to reproductive rights, Bloomberg’s campaign team reported.
“Trump has also undermined women’s access to legal abortions. In one of his first actions as president, he expanded and reinstated the international anti-life policy or Global Gag Rule, which requires foreign organizations that receive U.S. funds to certify that they do not promote or perform abortions. It also instituted a domestic gag rule that prohibits family planning clinics from receiving federal funds to consult or refer patients for abortions,” Bloomberg said.
In his view, “reproductive freedom is under threat in Washington, and President Trump is leading the charge”.
Bloomberg’s plan, by contrast, includes several pillars that focus on his belief in a woman’s right to choose if and when she wants to have a family, expanding access to affordable contraception, and eradicating barriers to safe and legal abortions.
