Joe Biden, vice president of the United States for Barack Obama and now a candidate for the Democratic candidacy for the 2020 elections, criticized Republicans for supporting the strategy of President Donald Trump to defend himself before a possible political trial, in an interview with CNN.
Biden focused his criticism on conservative Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s main allies in Congress.
“Lindsey is about to fall so low that I think she’s going to regret it for the rest of her life,” Biden said.
Currently, House Democrats are leading an investigation to open impeachment proceedings against Trump for pressuring Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son Hunter for alleged corruption in Ukraine.
Republicans have closed ranks to defend Trump in the process, a year before the U.S. elections, and Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, this week requested documents on the Biden and Ukraine.
Specifically, Graham has asked the State Department to register Biden’s calls when he was vice president with former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and whether any of those talks mentioned Kiev’s investigation into the activity of Mykola Zlochevsky, owner of the natural gas company Burisma, whose board of directors included Hunter Biden.
Asked what he would say to Graham, Biden replied, “I would say ‘Lindsey, I’m ashamed of what you’re doing.
“I am disappointed, and frankly quite angry that (Graham) knows me; he knows my son; he knows there is nothing,” lamented the Democratic candidate.
He also complained about the performance of Republicans in general during the impeachment investigation and about Trump himself.
“Especially Trump trying to intimidate witnesses while they are appearing. What kind of man is this? That alone is enough to be considered a pariah,” Biden said Friday night.
The investigation to open a possible impeachment trial of the president is taking place ten weeks before the celebration of the Iowa caucus in early February, the first date in the Democratic primaries to choose the candidate who will fight Trump in the November 2020 elections.
In that sense, Biden showed confidence in his possibilities: “I eclipse the rest (of Democratic candidates).
He added that the voters surveyed in the last polls “say that the most important thing they need is a candidate who beats Donald Trump.
